What is "LAT" in the knife calibration

With a tangential knife you have 3 parameters to setup the knife calibration:

1. Origin
2. Lat
3. Long

The picture below should make it a bit more clear.

When a knife would be theoretically perfecter than the knife would be positioned like on the picture below: "Theoretical center/orientation of the knife"

However, due to deviations on the knife tip position and orientation, the knife tip will be out of the center.

The deviation in the lateral direction we call the lateral deviation. This deviation is compensated with the "LAT" parameter.

Example

If the "LAT" is not calibrated when installing a new knife, this can cause issues with the cutting size.

Attached you will find some pictures explaining why. In this sample, you can see the effect of the setting for the lateral offset.
The lateral offset displaces the knife tip perpendicular to the cutting path.
This is to compensate for inaccuracies introduced when producing the knife, the knife holder, the cutter head.
The effect of the lateral offset is best seen when a contour made of two parallel lines close to each other is cut in such a way the direction of the two lines are in each opposite direction.
